We Threw a Y2K Party in Santa Monica (2021)

It was a month after the ‘CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST’ listening party where Tyler, The Creator and others pulled up to my house-party on Melrose ave. and all my close friends were asking me everyday when the next party was as if I threw them often, let alone in the thick of the pandemic, a few months into moving into Los Angeles. Once again, I couldn’t decline the offer to go for it but was shocked for the overwhelming response for another.

While planning this event, I must admit it was a complete disaster. Many of the pandemic rules were reinstated, causing most online venues to refund me instantly. I had already purchased over 120 tickets and was ready to go the next day with no venue.

On the morning of the event, I received a notification on my phone that the venue had accepted my request to host for the day! However, it wasn’t a traditional venue. It was a photo studio I had found on a website that could only accommodate a maximum of 65 people. This was clearly not ideal, but I couldn’t turn back now.

I arrived alone at the location and was greeted by the owner, who gave me a tour of the place. She showed me where the cameras and WiFi were located and then left. As soon as she was gone and turned her back, the food trucks for the event, my friends with the speaker system, and both AG Club and Villian Park arrived and began decorating the venue before everyone else arrived. Naturally, they disconnected the WiFi and security cameras in view of the event.

All in all for a really last minute event and honestly not being able to manage it as well as I had hoped due to the pandemic, everybody had a really great time and felt like the start of the end of the pandemic for some and for others, the last time a lot of creatives were in the same room together before lots of those moved back home or wherever it may be before the pandemic actually ended a few months to a year later.
